I'm an SL noob. In fact, I'm still hanging out on orientation island or whatever the second island is called, and planning to stay there until I really understand how to build stuff, dress myself, not walk out into the water and be unable to stop as I did a few days ago, etc.
All the coverage SL is getting from USA Today and the NY Times and other mainstream media is making me a bit -- nervous, I guess. Has all the hype changed SL? I'm a total internet geek and information junkie, but I'm worried about "the man" warping everything that was cool in SL before I can even get there.
So I guess what I'm asking is "What do you think about all the attention Second Life has gotten in the mainstream media for the last month or so? What about the SL presence of big-name companies like IBM and Sears?"

I've been in SL (on and off again) since 2005. The biggest thing that has changed is land prices. It is a lot more expensive to own land right now than it was even six months ago. The big named companies have increased attention around SL but haven't done all that much to improve it.
Have fun... and if you have any questions send an IM to AnthonyFontana in world (even if I'm offline).
